What Are the Benefits of Mamaki Tea?

A Look at What Science Actually Says

Māmaki (Pipturus albidus) has been part of Hawaiian herbal traditions for generations, but in recent years the plant has also attracted attention from scientists interested in its chemical composition and biological activity.

That distinction matters. Traditional use can tell us why a plant has remained important within a culture, while scientific research asks a different question: what can actually be measured in the plant, and what evidence exists for its effects?

When researchers have examined Mamaki leaves, they have found several interesting compounds. At the same time, scientists studying the plant acknowledge that much more human research is needed before many of the health claims commonly associated with Mamaki can be considered established.

So rather than treating Mamaki as another internet “miracle tea,” let's look at what researchers have actually discovered.

Mamaki Contains Several Studied Plant Compounds

One of the better-known studies of Mamaki was conducted by researchers associated with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and the USDA Agricultural Research Service.

The researchers identified three notable compounds in Mamaki leaves: catechins, chlorogenic acid and rutin. They also measured antioxidant activity in tea prepared from Mamaki leaves.

These compounds aren't exclusive to Mamaki. They occur in various plants and foods and have been extensively investigated by scientists because of their biological properties.

What makes the research interesting for Mamaki is that it provides measurable evidence that the leaves contain naturally occurring phytochemicals rather than relying solely on traditional descriptions of the plant.

Antioxidant Activity Has Been Measured in Mamaki Tea

“Antioxidant” is used so frequently in wellness marketing that it can become almost meaningless. With Mamaki, however, researchers have actually measured antioxidant activity.

The University of Hawaiʻi/USDA study evaluated brewed Mamaki tea and found measurable total antioxidant activity. Researchers also examined how preparation and storage affected those measurements.

A separate 2022 study of Hawaiian-grown Mamaki also investigated its antioxidant properties along with other potential biological activities.

This doesn't mean drinking Mamaki has been proven to prevent disease. Laboratory measurements of antioxidant activity and demonstrated health outcomes in humans are two very different things.

But it does mean there is scientific evidence behind the statement that Mamaki contains compounds with antioxidant activity.

Why Scientists Are Interested in Mamaki Polyphenols

Polyphenols are a broad family of compounds naturally produced by plants. Researchers study them because of the different ways they may interact with biological processes.

Mamaki's catechins, chlorogenic acid, and rutin therefore give researchers several reasons to investigate the plant further.

Interestingly, research at the University of Hawaiʻi has continued examining the phenolic content of Mamaki, including how growing conditions and pre-harvest treatments may affect the amount of these compounds in its leaves.

That introduces an important point that doesn't receive enough attention in herbal-tea marketing: not every leaf necessarily has exactly the same chemical composition.

Where and how a plant is grown, harvested, processed, and stored can influence its botanical composition.

What About Mamaki and Inflammation?

This is where we need to distinguish promising research from proven benefits.

A comprehensive scientific review published in 2023 examined the available research on Mamaki and discussed experimental findings involving antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and other biological activities. The authors were affiliated with institutions including the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo's Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

That sounds impressive and it is an interesting area of research.

Much of the evidence remains laboratory, chemical, preclinical or otherwise preliminary.

The authors themselves emphasize that the scientific mechanisms behind Mamaki's reported effects remain unclear and that further research is needed.

What About Cholesterol, Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar?

These are some of the biggest claims you'll encounter when searching for Mamaki online.

They also need the most caution.

Mamaki has a documented history of ethnomedicinal use in Hawaii and scientific reviews record traditional uses involving a variety of health concerns.

Based on the research currently available, there is enough high-quality human clinical evidence to say that drinking Mamaki tea will lower someone's cholesterol or blood sugar.

That's why a responsible description should say that these are areas associated with traditional use or scientific interest, not established outcomes from drinking Mamaki tea.

A Hawaiian Plant With a Long History Before the Laboratory

There's another side of Mamaki that shouldn't disappear just because we're discussing modern science.

Mamaki wasn't discovered by a laboratory.

It is an endemic Hawaiian plant with a history of use in Native Hawaiian culture. Its leaves, fruit, wood and bark have historically served different purposes, including traditional herbal applications and the production of materials such as kapa. Modern scientific reviews recognize this ethnobotanical history when examining why Mamaki remains culturally and scientifically interesting today. Modern researchers are essentially investigating a plant that Hawaiians knew and used long before scientists began identifying individual molecules in its leaves.

So What Benefits of Mamaki Tea Can We Actually Support?

Based on today's evidence, the most responsible answer isn't a dramatic list of diseases that Mamaki supposedly treats.

We can say that Mamaki is a naturally caffeine-free Hawaiian herbal tea and that researchers have identified catechins, chlorogenic acid, rutin and other phytochemicals in its leaves. Laboratory studies have demonstrated antioxidant activity and researchers continue investigating additional biological properties of the plant.

We can also say that Mamaki has a substantial history of traditional use in Hawaii.

What we cannot responsibly say is that Mamaki tea has been clinically proven to cure, prevent or treat specific diseases.

And in a way, that's what makes the current story of Mamaki interesting. Science hasn't finished with this plant.

From Hawaiian Tradition to Modern Research

Mamaki sits at an unusual intersection of Hawaiian botanical tradition and modern scientific investigation.

For centuries, people didn't need a laboratory analysis to know the plant existed or to incorporate it into traditional practices. Today, researchers can look much deeper identifying individual compounds in the leaves, measuring antioxidant activity and investigating how those compounds behave.

The research doesn't validate every health claim made about Mamaki on the internet. But it does show that Mamaki is a chemically interesting Hawaiian plant worthy of further study.

Where to buy mamaki?

Where to Buy High-Quality Mamaki Tea.

Because Mamaki is a plant native to Hawaii, finding authentic, high-quality Mamaki tea outside the islands is almost impossible. Mamaki is not produced on the same large commercial scale as conventional tea and only a limited number of Hawaiian growers cultivate and harvest the leaves for herbal tea.

The quality can also depend on how the leaves are grown, harvested, dried and stored. Carefully dried whole leaves should retain their natural character rather than being heavily processed into an unrecognizable product.

Hawaiian Wonders works with growers in Hawaii to source high-quality Mamaki leaves and offers authentic Hawaiian Mamaki Whole Leaf Tea. The leaves are carefully dried and packed in Hawaii, allowing customers throughout the United States to experience genuine Hawaiian Mamaki without having to search for a local farm or specialty shop.

Hawaiian Wonders also offers Mamaki combined with complementary botanicals for those interested in exploring different Hawaiian Mamaki herbal tea blends.
