A Taste of Hawaii at Home
Looking for a refreshing herbal tea that tastes beautiful both hot and iced? This simple Mamaki herbal tea recipecombines authentic Hawaiian Mamaki with bright citrus and floral botanicals for a smooth, naturally caffeine-free drink you can enjoy any time of day.
What Is Mamaki Tea?
Mamaki (Pipturus albidus) is a plant native to the Hawaiian Islands and traditionally prepared as an herbal tea. Its leaves create a mild, smooth, earthy infusion that pairs especially well with citrus, floral, and gently sweet herbs.
Because Mamaki is naturally caffeine-free, it also makes an excellent base for everyday herbal tea blends.
Hawaiian Mamaki Citrus Blossom Tea
This recipe combines Mamaki with lemongrass, lemon balm, rose buds, and a touch of stevia for a refreshing tropical-inspired cup.
Ingredients:
2 teaspoons dried Mamaki leaf
1 teaspoon lemongrass
½ teaspoon lemon balm
½ teaspoon dried rose buds or petals
A small pinch of stevia leaf, optional
10–12 oz hot water
Fresh lemon, optional
Hawaiian honey, optional
How to Make It
Bring fresh water to a boil and allow it to cool slightly. Place the Mamaki, lemongrass, lemon balm, rose, and optional stevia into a tea infuser or teapot.
Pour approximately 10–12 oz of hot water over the herbs and steep for 7–10 minutes.
Strain the tea and enjoy it naturally, or add a little honey or fresh lemon to taste.
Make It Iced
Prepare the tea using approximately twice the amount of herbs. After steeping, strain and allow it to cool before pouring over a glass filled with ice.
Add fresh lemon slices, mint, or a few rose petals for a beautiful tropical presentation.
Why These Herbs Work Together
Mamaki provides the smooth, earthy foundation. Lemongrass brings a fresh citrus aroma, while lemon balm softens the blend with delicate lemon notes. Rose adds a subtle floral character, and stevia can provide natural sweetness without overpowering the herbs.
The result is a light, aromatic, caffeine-free herbal tea that's refreshing enough for a warm afternoon but soothing enough for an evening cup.
Create Your Own Mamaki Blend
One of the best things about Mamaki is how easily it pairs with other botanicals. Try combining it with ginger for a warming blend, peppermint for a cooling cup, chamomile or lavender for an evening tea, or hibiscus and rosehip for a bright, tart infusion.
Start with approximately 2 parts Mamaki to 1 part complementary herbs, then adjust the proportions to your taste.
